How do I keep my information private during telehealth visits?

Video visits and apps can put your health information at risk if you're not careful. Here are some simple ways to keep your information private and secure.

Choose a Private Space

  • Join from a private room where others can't see or hear you

  • For health coach meetings, a parked car works too. For physical therapy visits, choose a space where you can move around.

  • If you can't find a private space, use headphones, avoid speakerphone, and position your screen so others can't see it

  • Turn off nearby devices that might listen or record, like smart speakers, security cameras, or voice assistants

Use a Secure Device

  • Use your personal computer or phone, not a work or public device. Some workplaces and public places monitor activity on their devices.

  • Keep your device updated with the latest security updates. Turning on automatic updates is easiest.

  • Turn on your lock screen, and set it to lock after a short time

  • Turn on encryption on your device if it's available

  • Delete health information from your device when you no longer need it

Protect Your Account

  • Use a strong, unique password for each app and website, and change passwords regularly

  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA). SimpleTherapy uses MFA and also supports Face ID to protect your account. Learn more in What is multi-factor authentication (MFA), and how do I set it up?

Be Careful With Networks and Links

  • Avoid public Wi-Fi. Some fake networks are set up to steal information.

  • Avoid public USB charging stations, which can be used to install harmful software

  • We'll never send you a link to join your visit. Always join through the SimpleTherapy app or web app. If you get a link claiming to be from us, don't click it. Contact us first.
