EAP or Behavioral Health: Which should I use?

Mental Health | EAP | Behavioral Health

Written by Melanie G. (Customer Care)

SimpleTherapy offers two kinds of mental health support: the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Behavioral Health Care through your health plan. They work together, but they're used for different needs.

Not sure which one you need? Call 888-425-4800 anytime, 24/7. A licensed clinician will talk with you and connect you with the right support.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Free, short-term support for everyday challenges.

  • Cost: No cost to you

  • Counseling: A limited number of short-term sessions

  • Best for: Stress, relationships, grief, work challenges, and other life changes

  • Also includes: Legal and financial help, child and elder care referrals, text therapy, and self-guided tools

Think of EAP as your first stop when life feels like a lot.

Behavioral Health Care

Ongoing mental health and substance use care through your health plan.

  • Cost: Based on your health plan. You may have copays or other costs

  • Counseling: Ongoing care, as long as you need it

  • Best for: Conditions that need longer-term care, like ongoing therapy or medication

  • Also includes: Psychiatric care, substance use treatment, and facility or hospital care

Think of Behavioral Health as your path to longer-term mental health care.

Can I Use Both?

Yes. Many members start with EAP. If you need more support than EAP provides, we'll help you move to Behavioral Health Care through your health plan.

Not every member has both. Your services depend on your employer or health plan.
