Knowing the phases of recovery helps you understand what your body needs as it heals. It can also help prevent reinjury.
Recovery from an injury usually happens in three phases:
Phase 1: Acute
When: The first 24–72 hours after an injury
You may have pain, swelling, and redness where you were hurt. The goal is to protect the area and reduce inflammation with PRICE:
Protection
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
Phase 2: Sub-Acute
When: Usually starts 3–7 days after an injury and lasts about 3–4 weeks
Swelling goes down, and you slowly return to normal movement with strengthening and range-of-motion exercises.
Phase 3: Chronic
When: Pain that lasts longer than 3 months
The goal is to get back as close as possible to how you felt before your injury.
Everyone heals differently. Your program adjusts based on your feedback, so keep rating your sessions as you go.
